By Day I Am Nothing, By Night I Am Myself

Excited to be letting this mixtape loose as it’s been burning a hole in my hard drive for a few weeks now. To get a look-in from Questlove of The Mighty Roots Crew is just otherworldly, too.

Part of Okayafrica’s Africa In Your Earbuds series. You can check out their full article and the tracklist here or just listen above.

More news waiting in the wings. We are living in exciting times (ha).

It’s no excuse, but we’ve been Metronomy-touring for the last few weeks. Threw this up on New Year’s Day. First original tune I’ve put out there in a little while, but there will be a whole bunch more this year.

It got some love on Okayafrica today, which I’m super-excited about ’cause Okayafrica and the whole Okayplayer camp have a take on music that’s best referred to as DOPE.

The site’s blacked out today as part of the online protest against the Stop Online Piracy Act in the US, but I’d click on the image above anyway to find out just why SOPA’s attracting so much fuss.

Liiiiife is too short…

In remixes on September 7, 2011 at 19:30

Metronomy toured with Ghostpoet back in April this year and we really seemed to hit it off. We both got shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize and at last night’s Awards ceremony I got a chance to catch up with him. I was reminded of this little edit from the end of my JAND mix for Drownedinsound.

” Life is too short to store up grudges / Life is too long to make no plans.”

Easily my favourite lyric by anyone this year. Stops me in my tracks every time I hear it sung.

The drum break on this edit is taken from a Bloc Party tune… You might hear a bit of Kele screaming in the back there too.

Got a couple of other exciting remixes in the pipeline. They’ll be up here before long.

Esben and the Witch and me

In remixes on July 26, 2011 at 21:14

As always, a little late off the mark with this one. For anyone who’s reading this… hello from New York. We’re here promoting the US release of the Metronomy record.

A little while ago, one of Esben and the Witch’s managers got in contact with me about possibly doing a remix. As I was a fan anyway, the answer was ‘YES’. This is the result. I went slightly crazy working on it in the windowless room that is my studio.

It was debuted on Lauren Laverne’s BBC 6Music morning radio show. She called me ‘an all-around good egg,’ at which point I very nearly quantum-leaped.

I certainly did.

Little Nigerian-themed mix I did for old pals Drownedinsound as part of their Africa Afternoon a couple of weeks back. Wrote a short article about the mix too which you can read by clicking this.

I grabbed lots of little samples from all over the place, but here’s the basic tracklist:

K’Naan – TIA
Wale feat. K’Naan – TV In The Radio
Rukus feat. Soul Brother – I’m Nigerian
Zee feat. Nosa – Standing
Oyinkansola feat. BrymO – Love Wan TinTin
Bloc Party – Ares
Blak Twang & Silvastone – Survival
Naira – Fly Hustle, Fresh Grind
Vocal Slender – Owo Yapa
Ghostpoet – Liines [OLUGBENGA ARES EDIT]
AKS – House Called Home

hold on to your mixtape

Before Cocknbullkid was making world-beating pop she was making world-beating bedroom jams, often handling the production herself. As we gear up for the excitement that is Adulthood – her debut album proper – she thought it would be nice for people to get hold of all those old tunes.

She asked if I was up for making a mixtape and I was more than happy to oblige.

Oh, and here’s the tracklist.

1. Mother
2. The Vote
3. Roses
4. Cure
5. Cocknbullkid + Radioclit
6. Black Sky
7. I’m Not Sorry
8. Impossible
9. Attention
10. The Head
11. Shake
12. Alternative Disco
13. Sinners
14. On My Own

had A LOT of fun making this. hopefully you can hear it.

Neon Asylum is a cool, cool DJ. I think this is gonna be on a remix EP at some point. Who’s afraid of 140bpm?

new/old-ish remix.

actually, not really a remix. an amalgam of three tracks from Napoleon IIIrd’s great album Christiania. The whole Brainlove catalogue is worth checking out, actually.

Karl Nova is an old friend of mine. Like I’ve known him since I was 14. He’s a great rapper. Very graciously, he let me chop him to kingdom come.

Sorry Karl!

MISTAKES MK 3 / speaking in tongues

In remixes on March 1, 2011 at 01:00

exciting things afoot. so exciting in fact, that I’ve been neglecting the blog.

above you can find the remix I did of Error Operator’s Mistakes Mk3 as a way of saying thanks for the great re-imagining he did of Like An Angel With No Mercy.

it’s on a nifty little iTunes EP that’s onsale here now and also includes remixes from worriedaboutsatan (NO CAPS FOR THOSE CHAPS) and Magnavolt.

i did some singing on this one, which is always fun.

also just putting the finishing touches to a Napoleon IIIrd remix which should be making its way to your ears before too long.

picked up the keys to a studio I’m going to be sharing with this dude. No more complaints about sub-bass from my neighbours.
